Lay out your fairness and cut-short requirements and challenge your students to come up with an algorithm. Allow them to decide how to balance the home-away fairness against the desire to run many pairs of teams against each other if the tournament is cut short. Bonus points for an algorithm that offers some sort of tuning factor for this.David Feuerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09876399378889159844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2564777502681463717.post-29107043439136304962009-11-25T14:11:43.378-05:002009-11-25T14:11:43.378-05:00@Sjoerd: It's certainly true that you can'...@Sjoerd: It's certainly true that you can't play all the matches in a round at the same time, so it shouldn't be used in situations where that is important. I use it for running a tournament where each individual match takes less than a minute, and the matches are run sequentially. But it could also be used in a real-world tournament where each team plays in two out of every three time units.Chris Okasakihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18247315355264748920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2564777502681463717.post-55670988651443112662009-11-25T13:51:15.928-05:002009-11-25T13:51:15.928-05:00This only works for virtual competitions. If you would do this in the real world for 7 teams f.e., you can only do 3 matches at the same time, so one round takes 3 match lengths.Sjoerd Visscherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10698430967044536619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2564777502681463717.post-15936598023679073822009-11-24T15:17:23.163-05:002009-11-24T15:17:23.163-05:00I just tried Blitzkrieg four times against this ye...I just tried Blitzkrieg four times against this year's winner.
